Platte-Geddes will be hosting the "Last Chance" Track Meet on Thursday, May 16. This meet was formerly the region meet, but it has changed because the SDHSAA has changed the state qualification requirements. Host schools used to receive reimbursement from the SDHSAA to cover meet expenses. We will be charging admission ($5 for ages 12 and up) to help offset expenses and are looking for a couple volunteers to take tickets from 9:30-12:30. Since it is the last day of school, district employees are not available to take tickets. If you are willing to volunteer your time as a ticket taker, please contact athletic director, Frank Cutler, at 605-207-0066 or via email at frank.cutler@k12.sd.us

Thank you to the Platte Police Department and Officer Semmler and Officer Workmeister for the "S is for Safety" Demonstrations. The officers talked to our students about stranger danger, bike safety, internet safety, and many other student safe behaviors. Our kids were an outstanding audience and asked many great questions.

The "Good News Call" today goes out to two girls, Riata Bultsma and Kaylee Gallagher. The girls noticed someone on the playground who needed a friend. They played catch and tossed a ball back and forth with the friend for the entire indoor recess. They demonstrated kindness, patience, and inclusion of everyone with this kind act. Thank you, Riata and Kaylee, for taking time to include everyone in your recess play! Thank you for demonstrating the Panther Way Expectations of Respect and Kindness.

Sisters Grace and Riley Summerville were nominated for the Good News Call by second grade teacher, Mrs. Sandy DuFrain. Mrs. DuFrain noticed that the girls spent their recess running around and picking up playground balls that had been scattered everywhere. The girls made a point to put all the balls back in our ball bin. Mrs. DuFrain wittnessed this random act of kindness demonstrated by the sisters. Thank you, Summerville girls, for noticing what needed to be done and helping us out!

Greetings Platte-Geddes Elementary Parents, We have much to be thankful for on this beautiful spring morning with a beautiful spring rain. Everything looks greener already! I also have GREAT news regarding our Summer ESSER Services. We have an allocation of ESSER Grant Funds (our COVID Relief Funding) that will allow us to serve one more summer of "ESSER Summer School" for our students! We are beyond excited to offer this program for a final summer! Many of you have asked me or our teachers about summer services and we have expressed that the funding had expired; however, now we do have one final round of funding available. We will be offering the summer services to students based on "Teacher Referral" first, and then we will open the services to "Parent Referral or ALL Students" if we have staff available to teach everyone interested. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child receiving summer services, please reach out to your child's teacher and have a conversation with them. After we have all students who are referred by a teacher placed with a teacher, we will offer summer services to ALL students who are interested. I hope to be in touch with everyone regarding the availability of serving all interested students by early May. In Education, Jennifer Knecht Elementary Principal/SPED Director Platte-Geddes School District

Today is our "B" is for Black Panthers Day. During morning announcements, we announced to the students that "B" is also for bikes and bike safety. Many of our students are now riding their bikes to school with the warmer springtime weather. If your child is a bike rider, please take time to review these bike safety tips with them. (Bike safety rules can be complicated in a small town. I tried to simplify these to fit our small-town setting as some of the bike safety rules are for larger cities. You can discuss with your child as you see fit, we simply wanted to announce and remind students of the main bike safety rules.) Here are a few tips for riding bikes safely… A helmet is recommended when riding a bike. Always ride with both of your hands on the bike handle bars. If you are age 10 or under, it is recommended that you ride your bike on a sidewalk, watching for pedestrians/people walking. If you are over the age of 10, you may ride your bike on the side of the street. Bike riders are expected to ride on the right-hand side of the road. They should always be traveling in the same direction as traffic, (not riding against traffic or toward the oncoming cars). Bike riders should always cross at intersections. Inexperienced bike riders should walk their bikes across the street at intersections. Bikers should always avoid crossing the road between parked cars or in the middle of streets where it would be unexpected for drivers and oncoming cars. When bike riding with friends, always ride bike single file, not in a group or pack.
